Fiona - I like the idea, especially the diagonal approach, not everything needs to be square. I probably would have cropped this a little to take out the LHS corner - I think it slightly unsettling. If you keep a 3:2 ratio, you would also push the top of the main flower head nearer the top - that might also make it slightly more dominant.
